John 3:16 and 17. These verses are next to each other. Can I hold onto verse 16 while you hold on to verse 17 and will we be close enough to hold hands?
That is to say, should I, with an exclusivist understanding of salvation (John 3:16), admit someone with a less than exclusivist position (John 3:17) into the household of faith?
Or consider this verse from I Corinthians15:22 “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive”. Those who believe in a limited atonement are quick to accept that because of the Fall, all are condemned; but are they as eager to accept the “all be made alive” in the second part of the verse.
And here is another “all” we exclusivist don’t like when those of a more liberal understanding of the life and ministry of Christ quote it to us. It’s from I Peter 3:18 “For Christ died for sins once for all. The righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.”
